When we have too much stuff in our surroundings, it can create an overload of clutter in our heads. As a result, we can become overwhelmed, unable to sort things out and then become so defeated, we fail to get things done at all that will help us be successful at work and at home.
Although it is proven to be incredibly liberating, one of the hardest things to do is to declutter. We have to take a moment to assess what we have surrounded ourselves with and then make the decision to either make good use of it or release it. This is hard because we can get stuck thinking we will find a use for things we have not used or convince ourselves it has “potential.” It becomes even more challenging when we are giving something up without having used it as much as we might gave liked after paying a lot of money for it. Remind yourself, it doesn’t matter how much it cost if it sits out of sight and is not something that is going to be of use to you.
If you are still feeling unsure, ask yourself the following questions:
- How realistic is it that I am going to really use this?
- How does having this around me, really make me feel?
- Is this going to serve who I am in my current stage of life and/or business?
These questions will remind us that we only have so much space in our lives for “things.” It’s really the experiences that count.
